Would You Call This Treason? A Case Study
Jun 3, 2013
According to the Collins English Dictionary, a person is guilty of treason or treachery, in betraying friends, country, a cause or trust.

This study explores the activities of a high-ranking military intelligence officer in the years prior to and during World War II, including providing military information to the enemy. These activities likely resulted in the loss of thousands of military and civilian personnel and drastically lowered troop and civilian morale.

This case study examines some of the contacts made and the types of information furnished. Participants are given the opportunity to decide whether the activities meet the definition of treason.

Exit Reinhard Heydrich
Jun 10, 2013
In the months preceding the European War which eventually evolved into World War II Great Britain’s Secret Service reported disturbing evidence of Germany’s plans to take aggressive military action against her neighbors. Subsequent events which quickly resulted in World War II proved the information true. Britain and her allies made survival decisions and took subsequent actions, when viewed in retrospect, may have crossed ethical line even in wartime.

This discussion examines the decision by the British Secret Service to develop and carry out a plan to eliminate one of Hitler’s most competent, dedicated, fanatical and ruthless aides Reinhard Heydrich.

Heydrich’s dedication to the Nazi movement and Hitler was unquestionable. His upward movement to Chief SD (Domestic Security) one of the 7 intelligence gathering organizations in Germany had come about very quickly. Heydrich was diligent in uncovering and snuffing out domestic resistance within Germany or conquored areas. He was so effective in eliminating prominent Czecs that he was referred to as the “Butcher of Prague. (Hitler’s Spy Chief: The Wilhelm Canaris Mystery. Maxwell AFB. Richard Bassett, The Orion Publishing Group LTD, 2005 p. 221). Heydrich successfully chipped away responsibilities of the other 6 agencies and was gradually bringing them under his control. If this continued it would eliminate valuable sources of intelligence for the Allies and could result in the assassination of Allied leaders.

The British dilemma can best be summed up as follow: Is it ethical to expose citizens of German occupied countries to extreme reprisal if it results in undermining Nazi morale and may help save lives of hundreds, potentially thousands, of Allied soldiers?
