Athens State is a member of the Alabama College System, and is an upper-division University, serving junior and senior-level students. Our mission is specifically to serve transfer students from the state's community colleges and other four-year universities.

Athens State has a vision. We believe in providing education opportunity to traditional and non-traditional students who desire to further their education. Following that course, the University is increasing its distance learning opportunities, offering classes on the campuses of several community colleges, and selecting times such as weekends, Saturday, and evenings to offer our classes. We are committed to a flexible schedule that meets the needs of our students.

The University offers degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education. The College of Business is nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
