Around the Bend: Drawings and Paintings by Robert Cox
Show Dates: January 5 through February 23, 2017
Reception & Gallery Talk: Thursday, February 2nd at 5:30pm
Rooted within the tradition of landscape painting, my drawings begin as field sketches and tracings that include direct documentation of the existing forms, shapes, and marks found in a specific landscape. Each drawing is a way to commemorate or document, in some tangible form, the experience of visiting a site of personal significance. The images are totemic rather than narrative – a visual iconography based on the physical characteristics of a specific place. Yet the space a region occupies within my psyche – its spiritual essence and significance – is not so easily documented. My work attempts to bridge that divide. Filtered through memory and emotion, my drawings serve as both memento and map – a reminder of the physical and sensual experience of a region, and a chart to a place beyond the tangible world.
