So what's all the noise about standards anyway? And, why do parents, teachers and administrators need to know about them?
The backbone of educational accountability is the evaluation of how students, including students with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency are learning and progressing in today's schools. How can we really account for student learning if we don't have a common measure by which to judge learning? Standards identify the goals of learning.
It is critical to ensure that student's instruction is directed toward standards. And, this alignment must be addressed in the student's IEP. No longer can IEPs be devoted to just what special education will provide to the students. Instead, there must be a linkage to the general education curriculum. In other words, there needs to be a standards-based approach to instruction.
