Case Study:
Background:
Kalani is an eighth grader who has lived in the U.S. for three years. Kalani´s primary language is Tonganese. Kalani had limited education in her home country. Kalani has been identified as having a learning disability with severe language disabilities. Areas in need include: receptive/expressive language, written communication, basic reading, basic math (computation and problem-solving), prior knowledge in many areas, and social-emotional skills.
Instructional needs:
Kalani is on the first grade level for reading, writing and mathematics. She is able to work independently and in groups of two or three, both with the assistance of an adult. She likes to work in workbooks. In general, Kalani works well with a buddy and in cooperative learning groups. Kalani does not accept school authority or routines well. She requires frequent breaks during instruction. Given specific teacher direction and close proximity, Kalani is able to write in her daily journal. Use of a computer and tape recorder do not improve performance.
