Throughout your readings you should have acquired some knowledge about accountability, and what it really means. Federal Law (IDEA 1997) clarifies that students with disabilities must participate in assessments, and accountability. Therefore, it is important that you understand what ´educational accountability´ is, and some of the legal issues that you may face as an educator. Please read the following statements and provide a brief two or three sentence response to each.
There is a typical definition for ´accountability´ as it applies to the educational system.
Accountability has a number of layers.
Classroom accountability can be focused on individual students as well as groups of students.
Assessment and accountability are closely related.
example:
Accountability is typically defined as a systematic means of assuring those inside and outside the educational system that schools are moving in desired directions. It can include more than the collection of data, record review and other performance assessments. ´Accountability´ makes certain that all students count or participate in the evaluation program of their own educational systems.
Accountability is expected in several areas of the educational system. There are several layers of which to consider. Of those layers we include the classroom, the school buildings, the individual school districts, and the local government or states.
Individual student accountability examines the degree to which a student is learning what she or he is supposed to be learning and the extent to which the student is moving through the curriculum, or expected rate of progress. Classroom accountability looks at the degree to which students as a group are learning and progressing through the curriculum as a whole.
Assessment is to provide information about student and system growth and progress toward a set of standards. In comparison, accountability is a means of providing those inside and outside of the education system information about how students in American schools are learning.
