Dr. Stephen SpencerThirty thousand years ago, our human ancestors painted images of horses on the walls of dark caves.

Five hundred years ago, humans began distributing information through printed texts.

As you read this, a human-made spacecraft is sending us information from the outer edge of our solar system. Travelling at the speed of light, the data from Voyager I takes seventeen hours to reach earth.

These advances in art, language, and science demonstrate the cumulative and interconnected nature of knowledge in the story of human civilization. Our mission in the College of Arts and Sciences is to engage the intellect, excite the imagination, and lead students to a deeper understanding of our common human story. Programs in the arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences support the mission of Athens State by empowering students “to make valuable contributions in their professional, civic, educational, and economic endeavors.” We prepare you for success in the many roles you will play in the on-going story of your life—professional, leader, citizen, neighbor, and friend.

Beyond helping you gain the knowledge and skills necessary for life-long success, faculty in the arts and sciences will also inspire you to imagine and create. As David Eagleman, author of the recent book, The Runaway Species, says, the basic processes in arts and sciences are the same: we collect data from the world around us, interrogate it, and create something new. We hope that our students will use their knowledge and skills to become catalysts for positive change in their communities and the world.

If you have the curiosity to understand the world and the audacity to transform it, the College of Arts and Sciences is the place for you. I invite you to peruse our web pages for information about our various programs and opportunities. The College of Arts and Sciences offers thirty-one majors, twenty-eight minors, and a graduate program in Religious Studies. Our students are involved in numerous clubs, academic organizations, and hands-on learning experiences.

Our faculty and I would be happy to speak with you or arrange a visit. We are interested in your success and hope you find an academic home at Athens State.
