Athens State University, founded in 1822 as the Athens Female Academy, is the state’s oldest institution of higher learning. The world famous Space and Rocket Center, located in Huntsville, is only 20 minutes away and the legendary home of Helen Keller, Ivy Green, is only an hour away.
