The Athens State University Community Band ushered in the holiday season with its annual Christmas Concert on December 3. Directed by David McCollum, the band is made up of volunteer musicians from a six-county area in Northern Alabama. Dr. Keith Ferguson, Vice President for University Advancement at Athens State, welcomed the crowd of nearly 200 people and introduced the Athens State Community Band.
After beginning the concert with the Star-Spangled Banner, the band then performed several classic holiday tunes. The show included a sing-along portion, led by Mary Crowell, where audience members were encouraged to join in with singing several Christmas favorites. Jeff Fenton, John Vassar, and Elizabeth Niedzwiecki also performed solos during the show. After the concert, guests were treated to a reception hosted by the Athens State Alumni Association where they were able to enjoy cookies and treats from Mrs. Claus’s kitchen and visit Santa.
The band appreciates the support of its members and their families, the community, and Athens State University. They are always welcome to adding new members who are current or former band members to their group, and require no auditions for those who are interested in joining.
