For many, Computer Science is an ideal pathway to a successful career. At Athens State, there are three ways to get there: a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science with Concentrations in Software and Systems, Cybersecurity, or Intelligent Systems. All computer science degree concentrations provide a strong foundation in programming, business analysis, problem-solving, and software engineering with practical experience in contemporary computer laboratories.

Computer Science Degree Concentrations

The Software and Systems concentration is designed to prepare students for business and industry or graduate school. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare students to demonstrate adequate competency in theory, systems, applications, and ethics.

The curriculum for the Cybersecurity concentration provides students with the knowledge of technologies and methods to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and the computing devices that store information. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare students to be able to demonstrate an understanding of information assurance issues and have the skills to solve problems related to computer programming, computer networking, and information security.

The concentration in Intelligent Systems is designed to prepare students to solve real-world problems with contemporary tools and technologies in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. The goal of this curriculum is to provide students with an adequate understanding of technological, business, and ethical issues of intelligent systems and have the skills to apply these methods to solve real-world problems.

Computer Science Degree Scholarships: The ASSIST Scholarship Program

We are excited to announce a new scholarship program: Athens State Scholars in STEM (ASSIST). This is a National Science Foundation-funded scholarship available to students majoring in the following: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Mathematics. Students accepted into this program will receive yearly scholarship funds and access to additional support programs, including faculty mentoring, peer support activities, online tutoring, and career development activities such as travel to professional conferences and/or research materials. The goal of this program is to help our STEM students efficiently complete their degrees and enter the workforce and/or graduate school.

Small classes and other big advantages.

Full-time faculty members teach all Computer Science classes. The class size is small, and you’ll enjoy access to additional resources, including the Career Development Center and a Tutoring Lab specific to Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Sciences.

The Computer Science program is ABET-accredited. All classes incorporate service and project-based learning, with faculty members engaging with students in undergraduate research.

What can you do with a computer science degree?

In our region and in Alabama, computing jobs are in high demand. Since 2017, Huntsville has had a 306% tech job growth – and is projected to continue this growth over the next few years. To meet this demand, Athens State is preparing students through top-tier internship experiences, access to student resources like the Mathematical, Computer, and Natural Sciences Learning Lab and Center for Cybersecurity Education, and opportunities to connect with peers at professional conferences. Each opportunity is meant to provide you with the depth of knowledge to step into the varied roles of computer science majors. Our graduates are prepared for roles such as web developer, information security analyst, software developer, IT project manager, and Database Administrator.
