What We Do
Our mission at the Writing Center is to be a support service for improving writing skills and developing writers. We are a resource for students and faculty that provides guidance through the writing process for every type of writing needs in any field of study. We are a writer-centered Writing Center; we value building writer processes rather than simply producing writing products.
What We Don’t Do
As such, we are not an editing or proofreading service. We do not “fix” papers, or correct grammar or punctuation. We provide feedback and revision suggestions, but edits and revisions are the responsibility of the writer. In this spirit of author ownership, clients are limited to two appointments per day, or two per week, per assignment. Clients who are considered “no-shows” for scheduled appointments may have scheduling privileges revoked and are subject to account deactivation.
Our peer tutors are fellow students who excel in writing and are passionate about helping others. With a focus on individualized support, peer tutors work closely with you to address your specific concerns. Peers understand the challenges that come with academic writing. They provide relatable guidance, creating a comfortable and open environment for discussion. This relatability helps break down barriers, making it easier for you to ask questions and seek clarification on writing concepts. Through constructive feedback and encouragement, peer tutors empower you to take ownership of your writing process, fostering a sense of competence and self-assurance. We understand the demands of university life, and our peer tutoring program offers flexible scheduling options. Whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, our tutors are available to accommodate your preferences, ensuring that you receive the support you need when it’s most convenient for you.
The Athens State Writing Center provides writing support for students and faculty of Athens State University in all disciplines at any point in the writing process. Services include collaborative peer tutoring sessions with Athens State University student tutors to discuss clients’ writing and communication projects, along with providing access to reference materials about writing and communication, as well as new media technologies. We offer tutoring sessions in-person at our center located inside the Kares library on campus, as well as online, both synchronously and asynchronously. The Writing Center operates during the day with some additional evening and weekend availability to accommodate the diverse population of the university. Our consultants provide a sounding board for peers’ ideas, an audience for others’ writing, and collaboration in the thinking processes related to effective college-level writing and communication. They regularly engage with students in critical conversations about their discipline, assignment topics, audiences, contexts, and genres. They pose questions to help guide students through the rhetorical processes of invention, arrangement, style, and delivery of information. They discuss revision strategies with writers during the writing process- including strategies for effective editing and proofreading.
Plagiarism is a form of cheating and academic dishonesty, as explained in the Student Code of Conduct and Discipline in the Athens State University Student Affairs Policies.
In support of the University’s mission, Athens State University strives to prepare students for leadership roles, and encourages students to be responsible citizens, to have integrity, and to show consideration for others. The University expects exemplary personal conduct from both employees and students. [….] Violations of the Code include, but may not be limited to: […] B. Academic dishonesty, including: 1. Plagiarism-taking the words or specific substance of another and either copying or paraphrasing the work without giving credit to the sources, including: a.) submitting a term paper, examination, or other works created by another person as one’s own work; b.) Failure to give credit for ideas, statements of facts, or conclusions derived by another; c.) Failure to use quotation marks when quoting directly from another source, regardless of the length of the quoted portion; d.) Close and extended paraphrasing from another source; and e.) Self-plagiarism.
