(Studio Arts Option) The Studio Art track at Athens State University values the process of intensive individual art exploration in collaboration with instruction. It works with the artist as an individual and instructs students to develop a disciplined approach to their work while honing their individual style and maturity in their artwork. Inherent in an individual studio practice or in the teaching of a studio discipline is the in-depth work of the individual artist. To this end, studio work overseen by a professor is vital particularly in the senior year of school as students develop their senior research exhibition. At this level of learning, the completions of a painting or mixed media piece can and should take many weeks of work. Counseling students while they are actively engaged in their studio work is standard practice in upper level painting programs.

Program components for the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Art – Studio Arts Option include:

1. APPLICABLE GENERAL UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS:

To graduate, each student must:

complete a minimum of 33 semester hours of the last 39 semester hours at ASU
complete a minimum of 60 semester hours of upper level college/university credit (300/400 level courses).
complete a minimum of 15 semester hours of upper (300/400) level coursework in his or her major at Athens State University, not including courses taken by consortium arrangement. School or departmental regulations may require more than 15 semester hours of coursework in the major at Athens State University.
complete all course requirements for major(s).
complete all course requirements for minor (if applicable).
complete all of the general education requirements for the degree.
attain an overall grade point average of 2.0, a 2.0 on all coursework attempted at Athens State University and at least a 2.0 in the major field. School or departmental regulations may require more than a 2.0 grade point average (see major requirements in each discipline).
complete the total hour requirement as specified by the degree.
complete the teacher certification requirements (if applicable).

	NOTE: Students can take MK 334, Internet Marketing, and AR 405, Interface Design Management, and count them as one of their required professional courses and/or as one elective.

5. The Art major must complete a minimum of forty-five semester hours of art coursework, at least fifteen semester hours of which must be taken at Athens State University. At least 18 hours of coursework in the major must be upper-division coursework (300/400 level). All students will be required to exhibit their work on campus during their final term before graduation.

6. A minor is required. Students are encouraged to seek a minor in Art History or Marketing. A minor is not required for students completing requirements for
either a second degree in Art or second major in Art.
