Any student with a disability that requires special attention or accommodations should inform the instructor as soon as possible, preferably within the first week of class.
Students in this course concentrate on learning the process of art criticism as it applies to their own work and the works of master artists through intensive group critiques, reading and written critiques. This course is the first of a ‘bookend’ set of courses used to evaluate and develop the art major. Student writing and awareness will be compared from the beginning of their work of the art degree to the end of their studies using essays written in “bookend” courses AR418 Art Studio and AR402 Portfolio, Research and Exhibition. This course is also used to help students cultivate their plan of artistic development over the course of their education at Athens State University. There are three aspects of this course. One is the independent work done outside of class in the studio by the students. This work is assigned in the syllabus. Students are urged to complete work in their favorite media in order to build a portfolio. The second part of the course is lecture/critique. The third part of the course is completed on-line in the Blackboard learning system. It is a writing-oriented evaluation of the textbook reading.
