Kappa Delta Pi
Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in Education. It was founded in 1911 at the University of Illinois. The Athens State University chapter, Rho Gamma, was established in 1985. Organized to recognize excellence in education, Kappa Delta Pi elects those to promise in teaching and allied professions. "Membership is by invitation to prospects who meet certain criteria: senior level status with a minimum overall 3.5 GPA, (or junior level status with a minimum overall 3.75 GPA), certain professional and personal standards, and three faculty recommendations."

SAEA
The Athens State University Student Alabama Education Association or the Athens State University SAEA is an organization which offers you opportunities for developing personal growth, supportive friendships, and liability insurance for your protection. This organization was designed for all students enrolled in the Athens State University School of Education. Dr. Kathy Buck is the advisor (256-233-8290 or 1-800-522-0272 ext. 290), and can be contacted by e-mail at buckkr@athens.edu

Physical Education Club
The purpose of this organization is to develop leadership, scholarship, and professional awareness in students majoring or minoring in Health, Physical Education, or Wellness. Members join the State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Association, and attend and present at state, regional, and national conferences. Officers for 2005-06 are: President, Kelly McElyea, Vice-President, Jordan Cantrell, Secretary, Erica Scott, and Treasurer, Carlos Romos. Heritage Reading Council
The Heritage Reading Council is a local affiliate of the Alabama Reading Association and the International Reading Association. The council is open to all ASU students who are interested in promoting literacy. Members are current and former students in the area and teachers in the Limestone County and Athens City Schools. The total membership is approximately 140. The council meets on campus in the ASU ballroom every other month. The programs feature renowned authors, state personalities, local reading teachers, storytellers, etc. Each meeting also features a teaching tip to take back to the classroom and door prizes (free books) are given at each meeting. We are receiving rave reviews.

Council for Exceptional Children
The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the premier organization for professionals who work with children and youth with disabilities or gifts. The Athens State University Student Council for Exceptional (SCEC) Chapter 722 is open to ASU students majoring in special education, and to a limited number of professionals. Membership in SCEC provides students with access to two professional journals, and opportunities to attend professional conferences. Each year the ASU SCEC chapter operates a booth at the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers' convention to raise funds for chapter activities, and to assist the special education department in its mission.

Elementary Majors' Club
The Elementary Majors' Club is an organization open to all junior and senior education majors. The purpose of this program is to provide a network of support and assistance to all members. Each year the club hosts a booth at the annual Fiddlers' Convention and uses profits to support literacy-based programs with local schools. Meetings are held on a monthly basis and membership dues are $5.00 per semester.

Athens State University Multicultural Club
Organized by Professor Wanda Hutchinson, the Athens State University MultiCultural Club has four beliefs that serve as focal points in the organization's philosophy. These fundamental beliefs are respect, understand, and appreciate cultural diversity, reduce racism, prejudice, and discrimination through education and communication, the equality of all people regardless of race, religion, culture, ethnicity, age, gender or exceptionality, and the increased social awareness of problems associated with minorities and at-risk children.
