Wimba

What is Wimba?

Wimba is an online web conferencing service that allows you to enter a “live classroom” where you can speak with one another over the computer (using a headset microphone and webcam). It also enables you to communicate with one another using text chat, view PowerPoint slides, surf the internet, share a whiteboard, and discuss and present materials to peers.

Wimba Product Description

Voice Board - A Wimba Voice Board is an audio discussion board where both teachers and students can post recordings which are linked together in a discussion thread.

Podcaster - the Podcaster is used by the teacher to deliver 'podcasts'. Students can easily download a series of audio recordings (via iTunes or similar software) to mp3 players such as an iPod.

Voice email - allows faculty and students to create and send emails that include voice and text messaging

Pronto - is an instant messaging (IM) and voice chat tool that allows you to communicate with your classmates, anytime. While it offers many similar features as other instant messaging tools such as AIM and Yahoo Instant Messenger, you don’t need to hunt down contact information for your classmates. Your classmates are automatically added to your user list. You can send instant messages and use voice chat with a single user or multiple users at the same time.

Steps to a successful Wimba Session

1. For the optimal Wimba experience a headset microphone and webcam are recommended. At minimum, you can use the dial-in number while viewing your computer screen, but this will diminish the online experience considerably.

2. Run the setup wizard

3. Show up for your Wimba class a few minutes early
