Field Experiences

Field experience, a requirement of the Alabama State Department of Education, is an invaluable opportunity to observe and be involved in real life teaching situations. During P-12 school visits students will learn pedagogy and management strategies and, in some instances, be allowed to practice their teaching skills. New Field Experience Model

Field experience is a requirement for all students that complete a program of study that leads to teacher certification in the College Education or in the College of Arts & Sciences with a minor in Education.

Students are encouraged to take ED 301 during their first semester at Athens State. Field experience procedures and requirements are included within this introductory course.

1. What are the 3 components of the Field Experience Program?

Field Experience Program (3 Components) – Totaling 28 days

Component 1 - Field Experience Days (22 days)
Component 2 – ED 302 Conference (3 days)
Component 3 – Instructor Led Field Experience Days (3 days)

Component 1 - Field Experience Days (22 days)
Students submit an online field experience application to request placement for the 22 days of field experience.

  • 10 day limit per semester
  • 10 days must be completed prior to admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) (starting spring 2015)
  • 12 additional days (total 22 days) must be completed prior to internship placement
(Field experience days completed prior to summer 2014 will carry over into the new field experience plan.)

Teach for America students, ABC Certification students and recertification/ renewal students are not required to complete the 22 days of field experience.

Component 2 – ED 302 Conference (3 days)
Students enrolled in ED 302 will attend a 3 day conference on the Athens State main campus. Details will be given by ED 302 course instructors.

Activities include: Peer teaching and evaluation, large group discussion and reflection, and simulation videos.

Component 3 – Instructor Led Field Experience Days (3 days)

(Begins Spring 2015)

Small groups of students accompanied by instructor will complete 3 days of field experience.

Students enrolled in the following courses will participate in the instructor led field experience:
EL 420, SE 435, HPE 430, ER 319, SC 331, CE 432, AR 455.

Activities include: Teaching, evaluation, and daily reflection

Students that have completed EL 420, SE 435, HPE 430, ER 319, SC 331, CE 432 and AR 455 prior to spring 2015 will be exempt from this component.

2. Can I complete field experience during the summer semester?

Component 1

Students complete field experience through the Field Experience and Internship Office during fall and spring semesters.

Summer Placements
Students are given opportunities to complete field experience during the summer semester at Athens State summer camp programs. Applications are submitted directly to summer camp program directors. Availability is limited.

3. What are the requirements to submit an online field experience application?

Component 1

Requirements to submit an online field experience application:

  • ABI/FBI background clearance must be completed.
  • A current negative tuberculosis skin (TB) test must be submitted to the Teacher Education Services Department.
  • Students must be registered for courses during the current semester.

4. Am I required to submit an online application for field experience to the Field Experience and Internship Office?

Component 1

Students seeking a degree that leads to certification in the College of Education program, or in a College of Arts and Sciences program with a minor in Education, are required to submit an online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office in order to receive a placement.

Students seeking a degree, who are not seeking teacher certification, do not submit an online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office. Field experience placements will be made through the course instructor.

Teach for America students, ABC Certification students and recertification/ renewal students are not required to complete field experience. These students are not required to submit an online field experience application.

5. What is the College of Education 2 week course release for field experience?

Courses within the College of Education are released for 2 weeks during fall, spring and summer semester. The 2 week course release schedule is located on here.

Students are encouraged to complete field experience days during this time frame.

6. How do I submit an online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office?

Directions to submit online field experience application:
  1. Go to Athens State Online on College of Education home page.
  2. Enter your user name and password.
  3. Go to Student Tab.
  4. Go to Request for Field Experience Placement (ED Students).
  5. Select current term.
  6. Complete form and submit. (A confirmation statement will appear indicating that the application was successfully submitted.)

7. Am I required to submit an online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office every semester?

Component 1

No, students seeking a degree that leads to certification in the College of Education program, or in a College of Arts and Sciences program with a minor in Education, may choose when to complete the required the 22 days of field experience. An online field experience application is required to be submitted to the Field Experience and Internship Office during a designated time frame within the semester in order to receive placement. Application submission dates are located here.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) requires 10 days of completed field experience.

Placement for internship requires a total of 22 days of completed field experience; this includes the 10 days of field experience for admission to TEP of completed field experience.

8. What should I do if I miss the deadline to submit my online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office?

Students that fail to submit the online field experience application by the submission due date must contact the Field Experience and Internship Office by email in order to receive a late placement.

9. What should I do if I’d like to request a change in my field experience placement location?

Contact the Field Experience and Internship Office by email.

Changes in assigned placements will only be made under extreme circumstances. The Field Experience and Internship Office assigns placements based on the student’s address, student’s requests of systems, previous assigned locations, professor site recommendations and diversities of each placement location. Students are placed at a different location each semester.

10. Am I required to complete an ABI/FBI background check prior to submitting my online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office? If so, what is the process?

Students seeking a degree that leads to certification in the College of Education program, or in a College of Arts and Sciences program with a minor in Education, are required are required to complete an ABI/FBI background clearance from the Alabama State Department of Education.

ABI/FBI background clearance is required to successfully submit an online field experience application for courses requiring field experience.

If you hold an Alabama substitute license or a letter of suitability for employment in a school system, please email Mrs. Sharron Woods with this information. (We do not accept DHR letters of suitability for students placed in K-12 school settings.)

FINGERPRINTING Procedures: (4 STEPS)

STEP 1 ‐ Registration
Register prior to arriving at a fingerprint location

  1. Option 1 ‐ Online Registration (Cogent encourages ALL applicants to register online)
  2. Option 2 ‐ Telephone Registration (866)989-‐9316
  3. Option 3 – Out of State Applicants/Paper Fingerprint Cards
    • Out of State applicants may submit a completed fingerprint card AND a money order or cashier’s check in the amount of $59.40 made out to 3M Cogent. Applicants MUST register ONLINE prior to mailing in fingerprint cards AND must include their REGISTRATION ID. Submit fingerprint cards to:

STEP 2 ‐ PAYMENT

Fingerprint Fee ‐ $51.40

  • Applicants may pay online during registration using a debit or credit card.
  • No cash, credit card or business checks are accepted at the fingerprint locations.
  • Applicants may pay at the fingerprint site with money order or cashier check.
  • Payments must be made out to 3M Cogent.
  • Payment amount for ALSDE fingerprinting is $51.40.

STEP 3 – FINGERPRINTING

  • Visit any 3M Cogent fingerprint location in Alabama (See Print Locations & Hours at www.cogentid.com/AL)
  • Be sure to bring valid identification with you to the print location (See What to Bring at www.cogentid.com/AL)

STEP 4 – EMAIL CONFIRMATION

All Athens State University College of Education students and Arts & Sciences minor in education students that are in a degree seeking program that leads to certification must submit an email to Mrs. Sharron Woods, after the actual fingerprinting process has been completed at the fingerprint location, (Completion of STEP 3).

11. Am I required to get a tuberculosis (TB) skin test prior to submitting my online field experience application to the Field Experience and Internship Office?? If so, what is the process?

Students seeking a degree that leads to certification in the College of Education program, or in a College of Arts and Sciences program with a minor in Education, are required to submit a current negative tuberculosis skin (TB) test to the Teacher Education Services Department prior to submitting a field experience application. (Negative TB Skin tests are current for 3 years effective from the date read.)

Students may fax, scan, attach as an email, or mail a copy to the Certification Office to the attention of Ms. Sharron Woods.

12. How do I receive my field experience placement information?

Component 1

Placements may be viewed at the same online location where the online field experience application was submitted, after a designated viewing date each semester. Placement viewing dates are located here.

Directions to submit online field experience application:

  1. Go to Athens State Online on College of Education home page.
  2. Enter your user name and password.
  3. Go to Student Tab.
  4. Go to Request for Field Experience Placement (ED Students).
  5. Select current term.
  6. Click submit to view placement information.
Field Experience placements are made based on the following information:
  • Student’s address
  • Student's school system requests
  • Location and diversity setting of previous field experience assignments (Students are required to be placed at a different location each semester.)
  • Professor site recommendations

13. What is LiveText? Am I required to purchase LiveText for my field experience placement?

LiveText is an online web-based learning assessment. The purchase of LiveText is a requirement for students seeking a degree that leads to certification in the College of Education program, or in a College of Arts and Sciences program with a minor in Education.

Teach for America students, ABC Certification students and recertification/ renewal students are not required to purchase LiveText.

14. What documentation does the hosting classroom teacher complete during my field experience placement?

Component 1

During field experience visits, the hosting classroom teacher will need to sign the Verification Form for each completed day of field experience and complete an online professional disposition assessment.

Students are responsible for providing the classroom teacher with the Verification Form. Directions for the online professional disposition assessment will be sent to the school by the Field Experience and Internship Office.

15. What documentation do I need to record each completed day of field experience?

Component 1

Students are required to take a Verification Form into their field experience placement and get the signature of their assigned hosting classroom teacher at the end of each completed day. One day of field experience equals 7 hours of field experience.

The Field Experience Office will track all placements online. Students are encouraged to keep the original Verification Form for their own records.

16. Am I required to wear my Athens State student ID badge when I go out into schools to complete my field experience?

Yes, Athens State students are required to wear their Athens State ID badge at all times during field experience placements.

Athens State ID badges are obtained through the Athens State University Security Office.

17. What are some professional tips for me to follow as I complete my field experience placement?

  • Sign in at the front office immediately upon entering the school each day. Students are also required to sign out at the end of each day.
  • Dress and act in a professional manner.
  • Arrive promptly. Be on time or early.
  • Abide by all school rules. (especially those dealing with food, beverages, and cell phones)
  • Be positive, refrain from any negative comments, derogatory remarks or comments toward or about the school, its personnel, or its students either verbally or nonverbally (such as Facebook).
  • Students are to contact the school office and the classroom teacher immediately if they must cancel a scheduled field experience day.
  • Check Athens State email regularly during Field Experience. (This is a MUST! Important information is often sent during the 2 week course release timeframe.)

18. What happens if I choose to not complete my field experience placement?

Component 1

Field experience is a requirement by the Alabama State Board of Education, with the purpose of helping to ensure that teaching is the right profession for you. Completing field experience requirements is not an option.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) requires 10 days of completed field experience.

Placement for internship requires a total of 22 days of completed field experience; this includes the 10 days of field experience for admission to TEP of completed field experience.

19. How many days of field experience am I required to complete through the Field Experience and Internship Office?

Component 1

Students are required to complete a total of 22 days of field experience through the Field Experience and Internship Office.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) requires 10 days of completed field experience.

If you have field experience requirements you will be placed by your instructor. Students placed in a school setting are required to:
  • Supply proof of ABI/FBI clearance. This information should be emailed to Sharron Woods.
  • Supply proof of a current negative tuberculosis skin (TB) test. This information should be emailed to Sharron Woods or faxed to her at (256)216-6602
If you are placed in any setting with children other than a P-12 school setting, then you must:
  • Supply proof of a “letter of suitability” from the Department of Human Resources (DHR) or proof of ABI/FBI clearance. This information should be emailed to Sharron Woods.
