Internship

Internship (student teaching) is the culminating field experience in the teacher education curriculum. Each student teacher is engaged in full-time teaching responsibilities for a fifteen week period under the guidance of a certified, experienced mentor teacher and a university supervisor. Student teaching opportunities are provided at a variety of locations depending on the specific certification program.

2. What is the first step in applying for an internship placement?

The first step in applying for internship is to submit an online application for placement to the Field Experience and Internship Office during the spring semester prior to the school year in which placement will be completed.
January 1- March 31: Timeframe to submit placement application for Fall semester internship
April 1- June 30: Timeframe to submit placement application for Spring semester internship
Procedures for submit an online placement application
  1. Go to Athens State Online on College of Education home page.
  2. Enter your user name and password.
  3. Go to Student Tab.
  4. Select "Request for Internship Application".
  5. Select current term.
  6. Complete form and submit. (A confirmation statement will appear indicating that the application was successfully submitted.)

3. When should I submit an online application for internship placement?

Spring semester is the designated time to apply for internship for the following school year.
Students do not have to be admitted into TEP or have passing the Praxis II Test(s) scores in order to submit an application for internship.
January 1- March 31: Timeframe to submit placement application for Fall semester internship
April 1- June 30: Timeframe to submit placement application for Spring semester internship

4. What are the requirements to receive an internship placement?

  • Admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP)
  • GPA Requirements for College of Education program majors: Cumulative GPA 2.5, Professional Studies GPA 2.75, Teaching Field GPA 2.75
  • GPA Requirements for Arts & Science programs with a minor in Education: Cumulative GPA 2.5, Professional Studies GPA 2.75, Teaching Field GPA 2.5
  • Completion of all methods courses with a grade of “C” or higher
  • The transcript should not reflect any grades of “I” or “F” in the required courses
  • Praxis II Test(s) – passing scores on each required test respective to the major
  • Field experience – a minimum of 22 completed days
  • Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program (AECTP)): completed and received a passing score all three areas.
  • ABI/ FBI Background Clearance / Fingerprinting: completed and cleared.
  • TB Test: negative TB test results must be on file in the Teacher Education Services Department.

5. What is the length of an internship placement?

The length of internship is considered a full-semester, 70 consecutive days.

6. What is the absentee policy during an internship placement?

Students are required to complete an intern absence form, located in Blackboard, for each absence. Each day of absence must be added to the end of the internship placement in order to meet the 70 day requirement. Refer to the information located in your Internship Blackboard course.

7. What are the procedures for intervention if an professionalism issue were to arise during my internship?

A Professional Review Board composed of education faculty members meet as needed to review unsatisfactory performance and progress of students referred by faculty members and intern supervisors. Actions that can cause students to be referred to the PRB may include, but are not limited to, the following: an unacceptable score on Professional Dispositions; removal of a student from internship; academic misconduct; or inappropriate conduct. This review board also hears formal complaints from students. Recommendations are determined by consensus.

Removal from a school by the administration of that school or Athens State will result in immediate suspension from internship. The PRB will meet to decide on a plan of action. Interns are not guaranteed a placement the following semester. Implementation of the corrective plan of action will determine gaining another opportunity to conduct internship.

8. Can I complete my internship during the summer semester?

No, internship placements are made during fall and spring semesters only.

10. Am I required to come to the Athens State campus for seminars during internship?

Yes, during internship seminars will be scheduled of which attendance is required.

Internship starting dates for each semester are located on the College of Education News and Announcement page. Students may also refer to the information located in the Internship Blackboard course.

12. Where can I locate the Internship Handbook?

13. Am I required to register for an internship course in addition to submitting my internship placement application?

Yes, internship is a course. Registering for internship is exactly like registering for other courses. Below is a list of internship courses. To register, locate the CRN of the internship course on the class schedule for the semester of internship. Follow the normal procedures for registration.

14. What should I do if I miss the deadline to submit my online internship placement application?

Students that fail to submit the application by the due date must contact the Field Experience and Internship Office by email in order to receive a late placement.

15. Where do I find information about the assignments completed during internship?

Refer to the information located in your Internship Blackboard course.

16. When is the Internship Seminar held each semester?

The Internship Seminar is held on the first day of fall and spring semester. Refer to the College of Education, News and Announcements page for exact dates.

17. When can I view my internship placement?

Students may view their internship placement on a designated date each semester. Refer to the College of Education, News and Announcements page for exact dates.
