English Language Learner Minor
WHAT IS THE MINOR IN ELL AND WHY SHOULD I BE INTERESTED?
An ELL Minor provides mainstream classroom teachers training, knowledge, and skills to teach the culturally and linguistically diverse student.

Nationally,
  • Approximately 5.3 million ELLs, (students whose primary language is not English), are enrolled in PK-12 public schools (NCELA, 2010)
  • It’s estimated that 40% of students in U.S. schools will be ELLs by the year 2030 (U.S. Census Bureau).
  • 77% of mainstream teachers have had no coursework or professional development addressing ELLs (NCES, 2002)
More regionally,
  • As of the 2007-2008 school year, Alabama’s schools were home to more than 19,000 ELLs, which marks a 239.2% increase from the 1997-1998 school year (NCELA, 2010)

HOW DO I ADD A MINOR IN ELL TO MY DEGREE PLAN?
Discuss the minor with your advisor. If you both agree that the minor is right for you, then compete and submit a Change of Major Form to the Records Office.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO HAVE A MINOR IN ELL?
A Minor in ELL includes successful completion of 4 required courses and 2 electives for a total of 18 credit hours. See the current catalog for program details.
