Secondary Education

At Athens State we offer a minor in secondary education for programs in Art, English, Math, Biology/Chemistry, and Social Studies/History. Graduates earn their major in their subject area and a minor in education so that they are certified to teach in grades 6-12.

As a Secondary Education major at Athens State, you’ll:

  • Become knowledgeable in teaching students in grades 6 through 12
  • Be part of a caring community of learners
  • Experience hands-on, authentic work with students in real classrooms and schools
  • Observe teenage behaviors, teaching techniques, and classroom management strategies
  • Enjoy the benefits of small class size, personalized instruction, field experiences, and on line learning
  • Work with professors and instructors who care and have experience teaching in 6-12 schools

You’ll also find many opportunities beyond the classroom:

  • Meet new people
  • Make lifelong friends
  • Become involved in extracurricular activities
  • Join teaching networks and content-specific organizations


  • Public and Private School Teachers (6-12)
  • Directors of gyms, health and wellness centers
  • Coaches (e.g., drama, sports)
  • Education directors at certain businesses

Student Spotlight

Yuni Wolf is a secondary math major. She transferred from Calhoun Community College. She lives in Madison with her husband of 14 years and her 10 year old daughter. Teaching has always been her passion and she is confident that the Athens State Education program will prepare her to be an excellent teacher. What Mrs. Wolf loves most about Athens State is that the teachers are the best; very helpful and always available when you need them. It is a small university so you always feel welcome.

What’s happening in Secondary Education?

*Opportunities to submit artwork and original writings for consideration for publication

*Opportunities to major in Mathematics and minor in Science

*Opportunities for internships with local historical societies.

Alumni Spotlight

Kiley Soule ’13 is a first year teacher at New Century Technology High School in Huntsville. Mrs. Soule teaches Biology and Medical Interventions and is the co-sponsor of the HOSA club. Mrs. Soule is working on and has obtained several grants to buy special classroom resources such as trade books for her students as well as funds for field trips.
