Academic Scholarships

Presidential Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with six hours or less at Athens State with 4.0 GPA; must be enrolling full-time (minimum 12 hours in the fall and spring semesters, 9 hours in the summer semester)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
  • Award: up to $5000 per year for two years; $1875 per semester (fall and spring), $1250 (summer)

Full-Time Student Academic Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with six hours or less at Athens State with a minimum 3.5 GPA; must be enrolling full-time (minimum 12 hours in both the fall and spring semesters, 9 hours in the summer semester)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
  • Award: up to $4000 per year for two years; $1500 per semester (fall and spring), $1000 (summer)

Part-Time Student Academic Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with six hours or less at Athens State with a minimum 3.5 GPA; must be enrolling part-time (6 hours minimum in the fall, spring, or summer semesters)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
  • Award: up to $2000 per year for two years; $675 per semester (fall and spring), $650 (summer)

Student Activities Participation Scholarships

Student Activities Leadership Scholarships (up to two awarded per year)

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with a minimum 3.0 GPA; must demonstrate leadership through participation in student clubs or organizations and assist the Office of Student Activities with campus activities; must be enrolling full-time (minimum 12 hours in both the fall and spring semesters)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution, student essay addressing need and qualifications, and current resume
  • Award: $2000 per semester (fall and spring only)

Athenian Scholarships (awarded to Editor and Assistant Editor of the student newspaper)

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: students with a minimum 3.0 GPA; will have responsibility to oversee publication of the student newspaper, The Athenian; must be enrolling full-time (minimum 12 hours in both the fall and spring semesters)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution, student essay addressing need and qualifications, and student writing sample
  • Award: Editor - $2000 per semester (fall and spring); $1300 (summer, 8 hours maximum)
  • Award: Assistant Editor - $1300 per semester (fall and spring only)

Other Institutional Scholarships

Alumni Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: students demonstrating financial need; preference is given to family members of Athens State/Athens College graduates
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution, student essay addressing need and qualifications, and copies of all transcripts
  • Award: varies with type of alumni scholarship

Golf Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with a minimum 3.0 GPA; must demonstrate leadership through participation in student clubs or organizations and if awarded work 20 hours per semester for the Alumni Office; must be enrolling in a minimum of 6 hours in both the fall and spring semesters
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
  • Award: varies with student and availability of funding, generally $750-$1500 per year (two disbursements per year, generally fall and spring) for two academic years

Athens State University Art Scholarships (Competition)

  • Application Deadline: April 9 for award the following fall semester; November 15 for award in the following spring semester (only if funds are still available)
  • Eligibility: newly admitted art major students with a minimum 2.75 GPA; must be enrolling full-time (minimum 12 hours in both the fall and spring semesters, 9 hours in the summer semester)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • Meets art program prerequisites
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
    • For fall semester applicants, submission of three original (not from a kit or copied) works of art completed within the last 2 years and suitable for public exhibition in accordance with Alabama Center for the Arts gallery standards
      • 2-dimensional works must be suitably framed and ready for hanging – maximum dimensions 36 in. x 42 in.
      • 3-dimensional works must be ready for display with a pedestal or other display mechanism and cannot exceed 50 lbs.
      • All works must be labeled on the back or bottom of the work with student’s name, email address, phone number, title of artwork, medium and date of completion
    • For spring semester applicants, submission of Joint Photography Expert Group (JPEG) images of original works of art completed within the last 2 years - there will be no public exhibition
  • Award: up to $4000 per year for two years; $1500 per semester (fall and spring), $1000 (summer)

Athens State University Need-Based Scholarships (Full-Time Students)

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students meeting specific need-based criteria (must qualify and remain eligible for Federal Pell Grant program); minimum 2.0 GPA (GPA is given considerable weight in award decisions); must be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 hours in both the fall and spring semesters, 9 hours in the summer semester)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
    • Completed financial aid record with the Athens State Office of Student Financial Aid
  • Award: up to $4000 per year for two years; $1500 per semester (fall and spring), $1000 (summer)

Athens State University Need-Based Scholarships (Part-Time Students)

  • Application Deadline: May 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students meeting specific need-based criteria (must qualify and remain eligible for Federal Pell Grant program); minimum 2.0 GPA (GPA is given considerable weight in award decisions); must be enrolling part-time (minimum 6 hours in the fall, spring, or summer semesters)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office

Performing Arts Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: March 30 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with a minimum 2.75 GPA; if awarded, must perform up to 20 hours of service to the University through participation in the performing arts each semester; must be enrolling at least half-time (minimum 6 hours in both the fall, spring, or summer semesters)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution and student essay addressing need and qualifications
  • Award: up to $4800 over 6 semesters; $800 per semester (fall and spring), $650 (summer); awards may be in the form of tuition waivers or book awards

Foundation Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: Review of applications for award the following fall semester begins May 30
  • Eligibility: students demonstrating financial need; specific criteria vary with type of Foundation scholarship
  • Requirements:
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including two letters of recommendation from faculty at previous institution, and copies of all transcripts
  • Award: varies with type of Foundation scholarship

Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarships (up to 10 awarded per year)

  • Application Deadline: March 31 for award the following fall semester
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with a minimum 3.25 GPA who are current members in good standing with a Phi Theta Kappa chapter; if awarded, must perform up to 20 hours of service to the Athens State Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association each year
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed online scholarship application, including a letter of nomination verifying student membership and service from the Phi Theta Kappa sponsor at previous institution, student essay addressing need and qualifications, student resume documenting membership and involvement with Phi Theta Kappa and other college organizations, and copies of all transcripts
  • Award: tuition waiver of $1600 over two academic years

All-Alabama Academic Team Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: open
  • Eligibility: newly admitted students with a minimum 3.5 GPA who were members of the All-Alabama Academic Team from an institution in the Alabama Community College System within 2 years of transfer to Athens State; must be enrolling full-time (minimum 12 hours in both the fall and spring semesters, 9 hours in the summer semester)
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Copy of Academic Team Award Letter dated within two years of transfer to Athens State submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid prior to registration
  • Award: up to $4000 per year for two years; $1500 per semester (fall and spring), $1000 (summer)

University Bookstore Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: August 1
  • Eligibility: Must be a US Citizen; must be enrolled for both the fall and spring semesters
  • Requirements (all must be submitted by the application deadline):
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • All official transcripts submitted to the Admissions Office
    • Completed University Bookstore Scholarship application, including a short essay (maximum 200 words) addressing:
      • Your financial need, including scholarships or financial aid received
      • Your merits and what you have to offer Athens State University
      • Any extracurricular activities and honors
  • Award: up to $2500

Senior Adult Scholarship Program

  • Application Deadline: open
  • Eligibility: Students 60 years or older
  • Requirements:
    • Meets admission requirements; completed application for admission
    • May register for courses only during late registration
    • May audit courses only on a space available basis
    • Contact the Business Office for tuition waiver
  • Award: tuition waiver (tuition may be waived only once for each course audited)
