Annual Flag Day Ceremony

Athens, Ala. - Athens State University will be hosting its annual Flag Day Ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association on Friday, June 14 at noon in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom. A cookout will follow the ceremony courtesy of Limestone Bay Trading Company.

Lt. General Jim Pillsbury will serve as this year’s speaker. Pillsbury is the retired deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at the Redstone Arsenal after serving 38 years of active service.

Pillsbury commanded soldiers at Ft Campbell, KY in the 101st Airborne Division from company through brigade level while serving there over 12 years. He was selected to be the Assistant Division Commander for the 10th Mountain Division in 1997. He was selected for General Officer in 1999 and promoted in July of 2000. As a General Officer he commanded the Defense Distribution Center in New Cumberland, PA; served as the United States Army Europe Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics; commanded the Army Aviation and Missile Command in Huntsville, AL; and served as the Army Materiel Command’s G3/Operations Officer prior to assuming his duties as the Deputy Commander.

Pillsbury graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas in 1973. His numerous awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal and he earned the Army Aviator Wings and the Airborne insignia.

Music for the event will be provided by the Athens State University Community Band under the director of Dan Havely. The singing group Threefold will also perform. The trio members are John Barnette, Brian Oaks, and John Carwile.

"Athens State proudly hosts this yearly event that pays homage to our nation’s flag,” says Lisa Payne chairperson of the Flag Day Committee. “We look forward to welcoming General Pillbsury back to campus for what is sure to be an inspiring speech.”

The Flag Day Celebration at Athens State is free and open to the public.
