Athens State Offering a Group Trip to Chickamauga for the 150th Anniversary Celebration

July 15, 2013

ATHENS, Ala. - Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning is planning a group bus trip to the Chickamauga Battlefield Park on September 21, 2013. The day-long excursion will leave Athens at 8:00 am and return at approximately 8:00 pm. The cost will be $49 per person. Athens State’s Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Ron Fritze will provide some background on the battle as the group travels to Chattanooga.

“We are living in exciting times with regard to our nation’s past,” states Fritze. “One hundred and fifty years ago, our country was locked in a bloody civil war. The American Civil War was the bloodiest war fought by this nation in terms of the absolute number of people who died (over 600,000) and the portion of the total population killed in the war. Since 2011, various 150th commemorations have been held. Most recently there was a big one on the site of Gettysburg.”

Chickamauga was selected because it was an important battle and a large number of re-enactors at the battlefield and many interesting events are expected. This commemoration will draw some big crowds and Fritze and his colleagues chose mid-September due to the fact that it should be a time of pleasant weather. Travelling as a group by bus will allow the group to avoid parking problems and also to experience the fellowship of sharing in a fun, historical event. While we are in the Chattanooga area we hope to eat supper one of the many excellent restaurants in the city. Participation in this event is open to the public, faculty, staff, and especially Athens State students.

Fritze continues, “We are fortunate that a big event is being planned near us in Athens. The Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park has all sorts of things planned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle that took place there on September 18-20, 1863.”

If you are interested in joining the group tri to Chickamauga, please call the Center for Lifelong Learning at (256)233-8260 for more information about the trip. For more information about that contact Ron Fritze at (256)233-6524.

Fritze added, “Remember a 150th anniversary only happens once. So don’t miss out!”
