Athens State Hosts First Alumni Disc Golf Tourney Benefitting American Cancer Society

ATHENS, Ala. - The Athens State University Alumni Association sponsored its first Midnight Madness Disc Golf Tournament on Saturday, August 17th. Proceeds from the tournament benefited the American Cancer Society.

Bill Bullington, Athens State class of 1999, was the coordinator of the tournament. He was also instrumental in having the first course developed on the Athens State campus in 2006.

Bullington remarked, “I’m proud to be part of a fun event involving the University, Alumni Association and American Cancer Society. I look forward to working with them again.”

Beth Haynes, American Cancer Society Community Representative for Limestone County, and Trish Di Lullo, Athens State’s Director of Alumni Affairs were on hand to greet the participants and thank them for their support. The tournament raised $910 for the American Cancer Society.

“It’s wonderful that Bill and the Athens State Alumni Association took the time to put on this tournament,” stated Haynes. “It’s great to reach individuals who are not regularly involved with Relay for Life.”

Thirty-two disc golfers played 18 holes before dark and 18 holes after dark using LED lights and glow sticks to light discs and baskets. Each disc golfer received a CRF Champion Glo Disc, LED’s and batteries, hiking socks and snacks/dinner for their $30 entry fee.

Prizes were awarded for best score in the following categories; Open- Tyler Harbin, Women- Katie Cunningham, Advanced/Intermediate- Seth Wiley, Recreational- Larry Burge, Jr. and Novice/Junior- Chris Reese.

Beverages were provided courtesy of Pepsi of Decatur, food by the Athens State Alumni Association, promotional items by Zanfel and sponsorships by Nathan Broussard and Louis Yarborough.
