Accounting Students Attend National Conference

November 26, 2013

ATHENS, Ala. - Eight members of the Athens State University Accounting Club, accompanied by Professors Stacie Hughes and Emily Corzine, attended the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Student Leadership Conference November 14-16 in Charlotte, North Carolina. At the conference the students had an opportunity to network with over 500 peer students from across the country and attend seminars to improve their leadership skills as well as field-specific knowledge.

“As a first-time attendee of the IMA Conference, it was very informative,” remarked Athens State student Angel Watkins. “I learned a lot of things about what it takes to be successful in a job upon graduation. I’ve learned about different certifications that I can get and how that can help me in the workplace. I also met different types of people and learned how to network with others. I would definitely like to have the opportunity to go to another one and hopefully learn more.”

The event included sessions such as “Success is Easy…It’s Failing That’s Hard,” led by Ken Bansemer from McGladrey, LLP., and a session led by Rick D. Puckett from Snyder’s-Lance, Inc. Additional breakout sessions were held on topics such as mentoring, forensic accounting, leadership skills, journey from student to CFO, data analytics, XBRL, and career readiness.

“As an Accounting student at Athens State University, I was honored to attend the conference, along with other students from Athens State and our club faculty advisors,” stated Melissa Fulks. “We were able to attend several diverse sessions during the conference, and in addition to listening to great speakers, we were able to interact with other Accounting and Business students from all over the U.S. Several exhibitors were present, and I received some invaluable information regarding the CMA and CPA certification reviews and exams.”

Fulks added, “The workshops and sessions were inspiring and very informative, and we were even able to connect with some of the speakers in a small-group roundtable session. I would highly recommend this conference to any student wanting to gain valuable insight into the IMA and the great career opportunities that are available.”

At the conference, the Athens State club won a t-shirt design competition arranged by the conference sponsors. Participants were asked to create a special t-shirt to show their school and IMA spirit. The Accounting Club members (with special help from Crystal Juengel and NDesigns Screen Printing of Fayetteville, TN) designed and wore the t-shirt at the Conference Networking Reception. Judges of the competition chose the Athens State Accounting Club submission based on creativity, originality, and content.

“From a professor’s perspective, I could not have been more pleased with the quality of students that represented Athens State University at the leadership conference,” stated Accounting Club co-sponsor Professor Emily Corzine. “They demonstrated a positive attitude and professionalism during the entire event. It is exciting to be a part of such a dynamic campus organization.”
