January 7, 2014

ATHENS, Ala. - Athens State University has announced that Dr. Patricia Sims will serve as the University’s Dean of the College of Education.

Sims currently serves as the Dean of Instruction at J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College. In previous positions she has worked as a middle school science teacher, an assistant principal, and a principal all in the Huntsville City Schools system.

“After a national search we were confident that Dr. Sims was the best choice for the Deanship,” states Athens State Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ronald R. Cromwell. “She brings a high level of administrative, leadership and educational expertise that will serve well the mission of our College of Education to educate and prepare future teachers committed to excellence.”

Sims received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of West Alabama, a master’s degree in Secondary Education from Alabama A&M University, and a doctorate in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt University.

“Historically, Athens State has always had a strong and important College of Education and I look forward to being at its helm,” states Sims. “In my career I have noticed that those with a degree in education from Athens State bring with them a legacy synonymous with successful teaching. I am proud to be a part of this going forward.”

Sims has held many association offices, including president of the statewide instructional Officer’s Association, within the Alabama Community College Association. She serves on many local foundation and organizational boards, and was recently appointed by Governor Robert Bentley to serve as a member of the Alabama Forever Wild Board of Trustees.

Sims will start the new position on January 21, 2014.
