Athenian Players to present The Bacchae

June 18. 2014
The Athenian Players of Athens State University present their production of The Bacchae by Euripides. This play directed by Assistant Professor of Drama Dr. Hugh Long and translated by Dr. Francis Blessington of Northwestern University, will be performed in the newly renovated McCandless Hall on the Athens State Campus.

The Bacchae is Euripides final tragedy. It centers on the Greek god Dionysus as he returns to his mortal mother's home of Thebes to confront his human family and punish them for not believing in him.

Performances will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 17, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be charged at the door and is $10.00 per person, $7.00 for students and seniors.

“Once again we are bringing Greek tragedy back to Athens.” states Long. “This time presenting the story of the god, Dionysus, whose festival Dionysia is credited with the birth of theatre in 534 B.C.E. In our own Athenian Players twist we are transforming the Bacchants into a German cabaret.”

The cast consists of Courtney Croxdale, Patrick Kutsor, Jensie Britt, Laura Poe, Ashley Busick, Kelton Riley, Amy Bacon, Suzann McCollum, and Jacqueline Poe. Dr. Kimberly Jack will design costumes; Tracy Szappan will serve as Stage Manager; and Victoria Cochran as Technical Director.
