Online Indexes

What?
Online indexes are computerized databases containing references to specific articles. These indexes allow you to type in authors' names, titles, subject words, or keywords and find articles. Some indexes, such as Expanded Academic Index and Academic Search Elite, cover popular magazines and scholarly journals in a wide variety of topics, while others, such as ERIC, PsycInfo, Gender Watch, and Business & Company Resource Center, cover journals in specialized areas. Most online indexes only contain references to articles written fairly recently (the past 10 years or less).
Useful for?
Online indexes are most useful for finding recent articles (especially those published since 1980). Most online indexes include both the basic reference to the article and an abstract, or summary, of the article content. Many also contain links to the full text of articles. Although you cannot browse online indexes, the ability to search by keywords can make it easier to find articles on very specific subjects and on very recent issues.
