Phi Alpha Theta
About Phi Alpha Theta
Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society in History was founded at the University of Arkansas on March 1, 1921. Since its inauguration, Phi Alpha Theta, Inc. has grown to more than eight hundred and thirty-nine chapters in fifty states, more than any other accredited four-year college honor society. The total number of members since its commencement is more than 281,000.

As part of its commitment to academic excellence, Phi Alpha Theta continues to participate actively, through Executive Director and President, in the Association of College Honor Societies. Phi Alpha Theta enjoys the distinction of being one of three original departmental honor societies with membership in the ACHS.

We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of History through the encouragement of research, good teachings, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among Historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of History together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist Historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.

Alpha Beta Lambda Chapter, Inc
The Alpha Beta Lambda Chapter was founded on the Athens State University's campus in 1984. Dr. Millie Caudle established the chapter, with her as student advisor. Since its existence, the chapter has been among the most active in its division and has received “Best Chapter Award” in its division and continues to be a vital part of Athens State University's student organizations.

We, the members of the Alpha Beta Lambda Chapter, are dedicated to the magnum opus of history and labor in its scholarly research.

Membership Requirements
All members of the honor society are inducted through the local Phi Alpha Theta chapter at their respective college or university. Individual memberships sent directly to the National Office are not acceptable and will be returned. Our one-time initiation fee of $40.00 per student is payable at the time of initiation. This fee includes a membership certificate and four issues of our journal, The Historian . Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is a lifetime membership. Each chapter, however, may levy whatever dues or fees it deems necessary to promote its own local activities. Thereafter, there are no annual dues or fees. Members who wish to continue supporting the honor society may do so by subscribing to The Historian and/or to our newsletter.
