I.
Preparing (to plan for instruction)
·
Materials:
Alabama
Course of Study: Mathematics, page
22, children’s literature: Little
Number Stories: Subtraction,
dry-erase boards, overhead, overhead transparencies (2-digit subtraction
problems)
·
Objectives:
The students will:
1.
(Application) work with two-digit subtraction problem
2.
(Comprehension) identify the sums by playing Bingo
3. (Synthesis) create four subtraction problems for homework.
·
Grade Level:
Second

II. Orienting (to establish purpose, build background, sustain motivation, and provide directions)
·
Anticipatory Sets:
The teacher will read the book Little Number Stories: Subtraction,
to review subtraction. The teacher
will explain that today they will learn to subtract using two digits.
The teacher will say, “We are going to play a Bingo game to make
learning subtraction easy.”
·
Purpose:
The teacher will say, “When we finish today, you will be able to
subtract two-digit numbers without any questions.”
You will be able to look at 24 donuts and tell how many are left when
someone eats 10 donuts.
· Connection to previous learning/ Build background knowledge: The teacher will say, “I know all of you can subtract one-digit numbers. Today, we will discuss and demonstrate mathematical subtraction problems.

III. Presenting (to use sequential direct instruction)
·
Teaching Procedures:
·
The teacher will define
“subtraction.” The teacher will
review, “single digit subtraction.”
·
The teacher will say, “We are
going to work two digit subtraction problems.”
·
The teacher will show several
problems on the board.
·
The teacher will explain
mathematical steps involved in two-digit subtraction.

·
The teacher will show the
transparencies on subtraction.
· The teacher will review two-digit subtraction problems.

IV. Practicing and Summarizing (to reinforce and extend ideas)
·
Review:
·
(Application) The teacher will call
on volunteers to make up two-digit subtraction problems.
· ( Analysis) the teacher will call on volunteers to tell us how to work the problem.
· (Comprehension ) The teacher will call on volunteers to work a two-digit subtraction problem on the board.
· Guided Practice:
·
The teacher will pass out everyone
a bingo card.
·
The teacher will ask everyone to
get out paper and a pencil.
·
The teacher will give the students
problems to work one at time. If the student has the correct answer on his or her bingo card they will
put down a chip. The teacher will continue to play bingo until someone wins,
while making sure each student is able to subtract two digit numbers.
·
Independent Practice:
·
The
teacher will ask everyone to get out his or her dry erase
boards and markers.
·
The
teacher will divide students into groups of two.
They
may help each other.
·
The
teacher will instruct the students to work four problems,
then let each assigned partner
check the other student’s work.

V.
Assessment: (to check for
attainment of objectives)
·
Summarizing:
·
The teacher will say, "Today, we
learned how to subtract two-digit numbers and how to create our own subtraction
problems.” I want everybody to go
home and make up at least four two-digit subtraction problems and bring them
back to share with the class.
The
teacher will use a checklist to assess the guided practice and independent
practice activities. The checklist
will have the objectives listed as column headings.
Checks and minuses will be used to determine attainment.
For enrichment, the teacher will increase numbers and include
regrouping. For remediation, children will be allowed to ask
questions and review with other students.
