About this event

Sponsored by ACHE as part of (Re)Engage Alabama, Athens State University invites you to attend the Inaugural SCALE Conference focusing on Supporting Continuous Adult Learner Engagement in Alabama.

Now, more than ever, we need to find ways to recruit, retain, and (re)engage our adult learners in their education. According to the National Clearinghouse, there are almost 500,000 Alabamians that have some college, but no degree. Many of these potential students are over the age of 22 and are considered to be adult learners. This gathering seeks to provide a place for discussion about how public higher education in Alabama can identify and develop ways to support the ongoing engagement of the growing adult learner population. As the “demographic cliff” looms, many colleges and universities will be attracting more learners who are “nontraditional” and whose learning needs are different from 18-22-year-old students. This conference seeks to broaden the discussions around adult learners and better explore adult learning theory (andragogy) and find ways to champion adult learners.

Organized by

Founded in 1822, Athens State is Alabama’s oldest educational institution of higher learning. As one of only a few “upper division” universities in the entire country, Athens State is a destination for transfer students and students with more than 36 hours of credit who may have paused their education and are seeking to finish their degree. Offering over 50 undergraduate degree programs and options in addition to graduate programs, Athens State focuses on providing affordable, flexible, and high-quality options for all learners.

At Athens State, we understand it isn't how you began your education that matters. It’s how you finish. And a strong finish is only the beginning.
