Sherlock Holmes is a classic 19th Century melodrama adapted by star actor-manager William Gillette from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous stories, “A Scandal in Bohemia,” “The Final Problem,” and “A Study in Scarlet.” While Sherlock Holmes has become a household name, this was the first ever stage play featuring the legendary British detective.
“As always, I try to challenge my students, actors, and audience with classic dramatic literature that is rarely produced,” notes Dr. Long. “The chance to produce the first play that brought Sherlock Holmes to life, shortly after the Athens State University Alumni Association hosted a Sherlock Holmes-themed trip to Great Britain, was simply too much fun of an opportunity to pass up.”
The play will feature Bartholomew Hamilton, Whitney Thatch, Laura Kee, Gage Craig, Eli Foreman, William Scott Tuttle, Jilya Gossett, JoBeth Workman, Ann Sowby, Stephen Sheffield, Trent Thompson, Laura Poe, Arsenio Thatch, Forrest Johnson, Preston Pylant, and Syd Cochran.
Athens State alumna Tracy Szappan will serve as Stage Manager, Von Braun Center professional Syd Cochran serves as technical director, and Athens State English major Suzann McCullom serves as costume designer.
