Athens State University recently hosted the Alabama Women Student Leadership Conference, providing an opportunity for 200 young women to gain skills and perspectives needed to create a climate of support on an individual, community, and global basis. Dr. Jan Davis, successful engineer and former astronaut, was the keynote speaker and encouraged the young women to aim high in their careers. Break-out sessions were led by representatives from non-profit organizations, college professors, and successful women from a variety of fields.
This conference is unique in that it is planned and coordinated by the American Association of University Women Student Advisory Council made up of college students from across the state of Alabama. These young women plan and organize the conference a year in advance. The ALA-WSL planning was led by Aakansha Gosain (UAB) the Agenda Chair, Shannon Beck (AU Montgomery) and Trinh Huynh (UAB) as Recruitment/Promotion Co-Chairs, Narkita Laye (UAH) and Anglica Rivas (UAB) as Location/Facilities Co-Chairs, and Liz Reid as SAC Director.
The conference began 14 years ago through the guidance of Audrey Delgado, original SAC advisor and long-time, active member of AAUW of Alabama. Dr. Tedi Gordon, of Athens State University, served as the co-advisor for this year’s conference. The AAUW-SAC would like to thank the Athens State University College of Education, the Livingston Concert/Lecture Series, Athens State AAUW Student Organization, and the speakers that helped make this conference a transformative experience. Next year’s ALA-WSL will be held at Troy State University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
