Gail Bergeron with her painting Recently retired Athens State University art professor, Gail Bergeron, won first place in the Alabama Spring Art Contest and Exhibit with her painting “Bold Boulder.” As an avid hiker, Bergeron drew inspiration for her art piece from a hike she took in the Bankhead Forest, painting the beautiful scene of a boulder nestled in the woods.

Athens Arts League sponsored the annual contest and exhibit, and the Alabama Bicentennial Commission endorsed it as a Bicentennial event for 2019. High Cotton Arts in downtown Athens publicly displayed all of the winning artwork in their gallery through the beginning of May.
