A group of Athens State University College of Business students recently toured the Carpenter Technology manufacturing facility in Tanner, Alabama. The tour was part of Dr. Kim Roberts’ Operations Management course. Carpenter Technology Corporation is a leading producer and distributor of premium specialty alloys, including titanium alloys, powder metals, stainless steels, alloy steels, and tool steels. Students received a guided tour from Perry Detlor, Director of Operations, which included the raw material conditioning area, remelting and forging processes, and finishing process. Students also had the rare opportunity to see the world’s largest hydraulic radial press.
“I am grateful to the leadership at Carpenter for providing this learning opportunity for our students. Some things are better learned when seen in practice,” says Roberts. The tour reinforced concepts the students had been learning about such as lean manufacturing, visual management, quality control, and efficiency improvement. Other tour coordinators included Kellie Traynom and Theresa Nelson in Human Resources and Plant Manager Ernie Jones.
Carpenter Technology’s manufacturing facility in Limestone County, Alabama, began production in January 2014. This integrated mill manufactures high quality premium and ultra-premium forged bar and billet products from melt to ship and features the world’s largest hydraulic radial press capable of producing about 27,000 tons of materials annually at full capacity. This location is also home to the new superalloy powder facility located directly across the street.
