The Athens State University student chapter of SHRM will participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Campus Walk on April 24. You can join SHRM’s efforts by not only participating in the event, but also by supporting the team through a direct donation to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on the SHRM Team’s page at https://afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=267455. Or, if you rather, start your own campus team.
“Suicide prevention and mental health issues affect so many, especially college students,” notes SHRM Secretary, Camilla Ann. “With the raised awareness due to Covid-19, this is a fantastic opportunity for the campus to join the march.”
The Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are designed to engage youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide, the second leading cause of death among people ages 15-24. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, depression, bipolar, anxiety disorder, and other mental health conditions will affect 1 in 4 of us during our lives, and yet too often these illnesses go untreated. In the United States alone, someone attempts suicide every minute. Students are a force for change. Be a part of this walk and join thousands of students across the country to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
The SHRM team will meet on Saturday, April 24 at 11:00 am at Founders Hall. To spread out, groups can start the walk anytime from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Participants must adhere to social distancing and any state, local, or university face mask requirements.
