SUMMARY:Athens State University Community Band Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Athens State University Community Band\, a collaboration of musicians from the local community and the campus community\, will perform in McCandless Hall for this special concert. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public! Registration is required due to limited seating. \n– – \nThe Community Band performs throughout the year at various community and University events\, including Veterans Day\, Flag Day\, Constitution Day\, and others\, and hosts an annual Christmas Concert and Spring Concert. \nThe Band was originally started by Dan Havely\, the retired director of the nationally-renowned Athens High School “Golden Eagle” Band. He led the Community Band from 2003-16. Former directors include Roy Adams (2016-17)\, Steven Porter (2018-20)\, and Tim Clinton (2021-present). \nThe group rehearses in McCandless Hall on the Athens State University campus at 7:00 PM most Monday nights throughout the year. DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS THE SUMMER WRITING & ARTS SUMMIT? \nThe Summer Writing & Arts Summit is an educational and inspirational event for Athens State faculty\, staff\, students\, and local community members who are interested in either showcasing or improving their personal and academic writing. The purpose of the Summit is to highlight the importance and value of writing and art\, to encourage\, support\, and inspire writers and artists of every kind! \nWHEN IS THE SUMMER WRITING & ARTS SUMMIT? \nJune 26-27\, 2025 \n  \nWHERE WILL THE SUMMIT TAKE PLACE? \nJune 26– on the campus of Athens State University in Athens\, AL \nJune 27–at the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur\, AL \nWHAT WILL PEOPLE DO THERE? \nOn the first day there will be writing workshops\, work-in-progress sessions and author panel discussions. \nOn the second day there will be workshops in areas such as photography\, painting\, sculpting\, graphic design music and drama. The conference will culminate with an Arts Reception and Open Mic where special guests\, faculty and students will showcase their work. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND and WHY? \nThis event is for writers\, artists or anyone interested in the creative arts. It is also for those who are interested in learning a craft or developing their skill. Last year we welcomed Alabama Poet Laureate\, Ashley Jones\, as our keynote speaker and workshop facilitator. We had about 100 attendees\, and this year we hope to maintain or increase that number since\, in addition to writing workshops with local authors and faculty\, we are also expanding our focus to include the arts. \nThis will also be an opportunity for small businesses to sell their products and/or put ads in our program book; authors can sell their books and artists can sell their works. \nCoinciding with the Summit is the ASU Writing Center Writing & Arts Competition. Writers will submit their works to be published in our literary magazine\, and artists will compete for their artwork to be featured on the cover. Winners of the contest will be announced on the last day of the Summit during the Open Mic event. \nHOW MUCH DOES IT COST? \nThis event is free and includes lunch on the first day and light refreshments on the second day.
