Dateline: November 9, 2018
The Alabama Center for the Arts will be opening a new exhibit titled shakti on Thursday, November 29, 2018. The exhibit will feature artwork by award-winning artist, Tiril Benton. Tiril has participated in a lifetime of immersion in the arts, culminating in a wonderful body of work and has embarked on a painting career which has catapulted her to a meaningful position in the contemporary art arena. She has enjoyed numerous successful solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe and the U.S., with pieces of her artwork also showcased in prestigious collections across the world.
Tiril was born in London and now lives in Huntsville, Alabama. Primarily self-taught, she began painting following the death of her mother in 2000. Tiril works primarily in acrylics and paints by automatism, suppressing her conscious mind and allowing her unconscious mind to take over the creative process.
Inspired by Kandinsky’s ideology that “the more abstract its form, the more clear and direct its appeal,” Tiril seeks to translate the non-representational, divergent realities of shape and color onto canvas. She is influenced by dynamic emotions, exploring the many narratives spun by both memory and emotional attachment. One of the signature components of Tiril’s work lies in the way she is able to connect non-verbal communication with her audience while illuminating the sensorial realm.
shakti will remain open until Wednesday, February 20, 2019. An artist reception will be held Thursday, November 29 at 6:00 pm. The event will be free and open to the public.
