Maurice Dawson

I heard about Athens State University through a friend that was in the Alabama Community College System, and my father inspired me to get my degree. He was an active duty Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) stationed at Redstone Arsenal, AL as the director of the Ordnance and Munitions Schoolhouse.

Since graduating Athens State University, I have completed an MBA, MS in Management
Information Systems Security and Doctor of Computer Science from Colorado Technical
University. I serve as an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at the University of Missouri St. Louis, former Assistant Professor (Honorary) of Industrial and Systems Engineering at The University of Tennessee Space Institute, and Fulbright Scholar: Specialist in the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Informatics at South Ural State University in Chelyabinsk, Russia. I am currently recognized as an Information Assurance System Architect and Engineer by the U.S. Department of Defense. Additionally, I am a Visiting Scholar with the University of The Gambia (UTG), and recent recipient of the International Studies & Programs (ISP) from the University of Missouri St. Louis.

My biggest obstacle was worrying about deployment while in college. However, Athens State allowed me to complete by bachelors in a reasonable time while learning valuable life lessons. I was involved in the Math and Computer Science (MACS) Club, and Dr. Laura Russell and Professor Sam Campbell helped me realize my potential for Information Systems and Project Management. Dr. Denver Betts was also instrumental in ensuring that I graduated in an acceptable time frame to include guidance.

My research focus area is cyber security, open source software, mobile security, and engineering management. I recently edited a book titled “New Threats and Countermeasures in Digital Crime and Cyber Terrorism” with IGI Global. Other recent works include “DoD cyber technology policies to secure automated information systems” in the International Journal of Business Continuity and Risk Management, and “The Future of National and International Security on the Internet” in Information Security in Diverse Computing Environments. My love of doing research was gained at Athens State University.
