Job Announcement: Writing Center Consultant (Tutor)

The Writing Center at Athens State is located in the library; students who work here gain specialized skills that will serve them well in almost any future professional endeavor, including one-on-one teaching/coaching, content area knowledge, awareness of digital writing forms, and better overall writing ability. Because Consultants (i.e., Writing Center tutors) need to help students understand assignments, explain the key concepts of course materials, offer feedback and encouragement, and share appropriate resources, listed below are the desired qualities, minimum required qualifications, and preferred qualifications for this position:

Desired Qualities:

  • Eagerness to help others learn
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (in both verbal and written communication)
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Strong active listening skills
  • Desire to work with a diverse population of learners
  • Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature
  • Ability to use technological resources and various software platforms

Minimum Required Qualifications for Employment:

  • High academic achievement, especially in subject area(s) applicant wishes to tutor
  • Current Athens State enrollment in at least one course

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.5 Grade Point Average
  • Previous tutoring experience
