New Education Graduates Celebrated with Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony

Teachers' Pinning Ceremony

The Athens State University College of Education hosted the institution’s inaugural Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony for the education students who graduated this weekend as part of the Class of 2025. The pinning ceremony served as a meaningful and symbolic event that honored 73 education graduates as they transition from students to professional educators. This ceremony recognized their dedication, perseverance, and the noble calling to teach, inspire, and lead future generations – reaffirming their readiness to shape lives and communities through education.

“Although pinning ceremonies are traditionally associated with other disciplines, they offer a meaningful opportunity to recognize our students’ achievements and mark their transition into the teaching profession,” said Blake Hargett, Instructor of Early Childhood Education. “Over the past academic year, our planning committee has worked diligently to create a ceremony that is both distinctive and reflective of the Athens State spirit. What began as a vision last spring has grown into a tradition we are proud to establish. This ceremony serves as a moment to celebrate our teacher candidates with the excellence and appreciation they deserve. I believe the Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony will become a cherished tradition within the University community, and look forward to honoring the future educators who will call Athens State home.”

During the small, intimate ceremony in McCandless Hall, education students were presented with a special lapel pin and a copy of the Educators’ Oath, written by Dr. Patricia Elmore, Assistant Professor of English Education, especially for this ceremony. At the conclusion of the pinning, all the students rose and took the Educators’ Oath together.

In addition to the pinning, Dr. Tina Sloan, Professor of Elementary Education, was honored as a Distinguished Faculty Member for her meritorious service to the University, and Dr. Shane Barnette, Superintendent of Cullman County Schools, was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus.

“The first pinning ceremony for the College of Education marks a significant milestone in the life of Athens State University and in the journey of these students,” said Dr. Alyson Gill, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services. “This ceremony will now become a tradition that honors the hard work, dedication, and passion of our students as they prepare to enter the teaching profession.”
