Meet Amanda

Meet Amanda Scott, a College of Business student who is anticipated to graduate in December 2025. For this Florence, Alabama native, returning to college to complete her bachelor’s degree in accounting was more than just the next step in her career. It was a leap of faith and calling to persevere. Scott said she was supported every step of the way by the Athens State community.

After earning her associate degree from Calhoun Community College, Scott enrolled at Athens State University in the fall of 2023, drawn by the University’s strong reputation and flexible online programs.

“I had always heard how wonderful Athens State is,” she shared. “I have family members who earned their degrees here. After talking it over with my husband, I was blessed to enroll at Athens State.”

Because she has worked full time while pursuing her degree, Scott quickly discovered how the University’s personalized support and caring faculty go the extra mile to provide resources and guidance to students.

“The online courses have been wonderful and the staff are so helpful,” she said. “Dr. Ragus, especially, has been incredible in answering questions and guiding me through my degree plan. The support I’ve received has made all the difference.”

That sense of connection extended beyond the classroom. Through involvement in organizations such as the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) and Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, Scott refined her leadership and communication skills while building a network of peers who shared her drive and determination. Her academic excellence earned her recognition on both the President’s List and the Dean’s List, as well as more than $17,000 in grants and scholarships —financial support she calls “a tremendous blessing.”

My faith in Jesus has guided me throughout this journey,” Scott said. “The financial aid and encouragement I’ve received have allowed me to focus on my studies instead of worrying about debt. I’m on track to graduate in December 2025 with my bachelor’s degree in accounting. This is an achievement that would have been much harder without Athens State’s support.

With more than 26 years of experience in accounting, Scott views this degree as both a personal and professional milestone.

“Returning to complete my bachelor’s degree isn’t just about finishing what I started,” she explained. “It’s about opening new doors and proving that growth has no age limit.”

After graduation, she hopes to advance into leadership roles where she can mentor others and share the wisdom she’s gained throughout her career and education.

Reflecting on her journey, Scott keeps one Athens State motto close to heart: “It’s how you finish.”

“Higher education is more than earning a credential,” she said. “It’s an investment in yourself and your future. With faith, determination, and support, you can achieve more than you ever imagined. I’m blessed to be part of the Athens State family.”
