Center for the Arts Dorms

Dateline: April 29, 2024, Decatur, AL – The Alabama Center for the Arts is now accepting applications for its new residence hall, which is slated to open this fall. The three-story, state-of-the-art living facility will feature 49 apartments for Calhoun Community College and Athens State University students enrolled in arts programs at both institutions.

The residence hall will offer a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, complete with both ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and adaptable units. Amenities include a refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and washer/dryer, as well as high-speed internet, study areas with computer labs, and a storm shelter rated for 250 mph winds.

“Athens State is thrilled to collaborate with Calhoun Community College to create a living/learning environment for our arts and theatre students,” said Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, Interim President at Athens State University. “This is a new era of opportunity for our students – our students will not just reside at the new ACA Residence Hall, they will thrive as they immerse themselves in a community that is dedicated to fostering their talents and enriching our vibrant, artistic educational programs!”

Construction on the new 15-million-dollar residence hall started in June of 2022. It is located two blocks from the arts center on Johnston Street in downtown Decatur.

“We are excited to open applications for our students and are also excited about the great things we’re doing with Athens State University,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, President at Calhoun Community College. This state-of-the-art residence hall allows us to offer a full and comprehensive college experience for students in a vibrant living and learning environment.”

The building will be secured with keyless entry access cards provided to each student resident. Video surveillance cameras will also be placed on exterior entrances and exits to add an extra layer of security.
