Congressman Dale Strong Announces $1 Million Federal Funding Award for Carter Hall Renovation
Congressman Dale Strong has secured a $1 million federal funding award through the FY2026 appropriations process to support the renovation and expansion of Carter Hall at Athens State University.
The funding will support capital improvements to transform Carter Hall into a workforce development and multipurpose center designed to help prepare highly skilled workers from communities across North Alabama. The project will strengthen the university’s ability to support regional workforce needs, promote economic growth, and provide flexible space for training and community activities.
The proposed renovation and expansion will also provide much-needed multipurpose space for Athens and Limestone County, creating additional opportunities for workforce training, community engagement and partnerships with regional employers and organizations.
The $1 million award was secured through the congressionally directed spending process, which allows members of Congress to request federal funding for specific projects in their states and districts. Funding is awarded only to projects included in final appropriations legislation enacted into law.
The project reflects Athens State University’s continued commitment to meeting the educational and workforce needs of North Alabama while contributing to the region’s long-term economic development.
“The new workforce development center at Athens State University is an investment in North Alabama’s future, helping students gain the skills and experience they need to succeed,” said Congressman Dale Strong. “I was proud to secure $1 million in federal funding to help establish this center, connecting students with career opportunities and helping meet the growing workforce needs of our region for years to come. I’m grateful to President Wehlburg and the entire Athens State team for their work to make this possible.”
“We are deeply grateful to Congressman Dale Strong for his continued support of Athens State University and the North Alabama region,” stated Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, Athens State President. “As a proud Athens State alumnus, Congressman Strong understands the important role our University plays in preparing students for meaningful careers and strengthening our communities. The transformation of Carter Hall represents much more than the renovation of a historic campus building. It is an investment in people, partnerships, and the economic future of our region. This investment will create new opportunities for workforce development, education, and community partnerships while helping us meet the evolving needs of our region.”
