Thank you for your interest in the Alabama State Department of Education’s Temporary Special Education Certificate (TSEC) coursework offered at Athens State University. The Alabama State Department of Education has developed this TSEC pathway as an option for individuals to earn a Class B teaching certificate endorsed for Collaborative Special Education 6-12. All required courses are available in a Hyflex format and may be completed in as little as one year or extended over a period of up to three years. Field experiences within coursework may be completed within your employing school. All coursework must be completed at Athens State University. Individuals enrolling in this TSEC pathway coursework must be employed by an Alabama School District.

Required Coursework:
SE 301 – Survey of Exceptional Learners – Offered Fall, Spring, Summer (must be taken during the first semester)
SE 395 – Culturally Responsive Classroom Management and Student Engagement – Offered Fall, Spring, Summer
SE 415 – Transition Planning and Learning Strategies for Adolescents – Offered Spring and Summer
SE 425 – Collaboration for Instruction and Program Planning – Offered Fall, Spring, Summer
SE 435 – Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities – Offered Fall, Spring, Summer
Coursework must be completed at an Alabama college/university that has been authorized to provide coursework for the Temporary Special Education Certificate (TSEC) Approach. 2. All coursework must be completed at the same Alabama college/university. 3. Documentation of enrollment in or completion of at least one course is required to begin the TSEC Approach. 4. A grade of “C” or above must be earned in each course. 5. There is a 10-year recency requirement on coursework.
