Society for Human Resource Management

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the leading voice of the HR profession.

The Athens State Student Chapter allows students to gain access to an immense information resource at the local, regional, state, and national level and to have opportunities to meet HR practitioners so as to develop personal contacts and networks. The organization also offers professional development workshops, access to HR conferences, and creates visibility for recruitment for HR internships and permanent HR opportunities.

SHRM has over 70,000 professional and student members in more than 425 professional chapters and over 300 student chapters nationwide. With the award-winning SHRM publications, you can keep current on issues and trends affecting the workforce and shaping the workplace.

As a student member, you are eligible and strongly encouraged to attend the Tennessee Valley Professional Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management monthly professional meetings. The Tennessee Valley Chapter is the Athens State University SHRM professional chapter sponsor. You will meet and interact with HR practitioners representing most of the employers in the North Alabama area. Through networking, research has shown that 60% to 70% of jobs are found by making these types of personal contacts.

Nicole Harris – President

I am majoring in HRM and hope to graduate in Summer 2021. I work full-time as the HR Recruiter for a small GovCon business here in Huntsville. Brief background about me. I am originally from a small suburb in Chicago, IL. I recently got out of the military, where I served six years as an Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operator. I traveled the world and served my country. Which were some of the best and scariest years of my life. During that time, I met my husband, Chris and we have been married for six years! We have two fur babies Goku and ChiChi. I am proud to be a part of the Athens State SHRM organization, and if you ever need anything, please reach out!

I am originally from the Shoals area but moved to the Athens area after marrying my sweet husband Jason 15 years ago. I am a former Athens-based portrait photographer and still enjoy photography extensively as a hobby. When my husband and I are not working, traveling, or volunteering in our church, we enjoy life with our dogs, Gilly and Asher, our two rescue cats Mimsy and Beams. It is an honor to serve within our school and our community through this wonderful organization. Please reach out with questions about joining and learning more about how SHRM can benefit you.

Valerie Davis - SHRM Vice-President

Valerie Davis – Vice-President of Chapter Achievements

I am enrolled under a special Major Degree that is titled "Individualized Degree Program", due to the nature of my acquired credit hours earned, as a full-time student. I am pursuing a minor in Human Resources Management and I will be graduating in May 2022. I am embracing the challenges of this new role as the Vice President of the SHRM Student Chapter at Athens State. It presents opportunities for our Chapter to become more involved with other Student Clubs at Athens State as a supportive community within our institution. I am also a part-time Retail Sales Associate at a department store in Decatur in which I enjoy very much. In my spare time, I enjoy reading under the sky on a local church ground, taking trips to Georgia to visit my family, taking nature walks as I snap photographs, and getting caught up on my favorite shows like "The Mandolorian", "All American", and "WandaVision", just to name a few. If you are interested in learning more about SHRM, our Chapter, or just need some guidance, please contact me or one of our great leaders here at Athens State SHRM Student Chapter!
