Chris Allen was set to graduate from Athens State University on July 30, 2015, but life had other plans. Originally from North Alabama, Allen’s journey at Athens State University was marked by significant personal milestones and a drive to give back to the region that shaped him.
“I had my cap and gown and everything,” recalled Allen. “I was ready to go, and then, nope, we had something a little more important.”
Instead of donning his cap and gown, Allen found himself in the hospital welcoming his first child, Willa, who needed immediate medical attention. The celebration of his academic achievement took a backseat as Allen and his wife, Samantha, navigated the emotional rollercoaster of having their newborn in the NICU. The Allen family’s NICU experience gave them a strong desire to support others in similar situations. Today, they are active participants in the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the Miracle Bash, a fundraiser for the neonatal intensive care unit.
A couple years prior, Allen’s journey to Athens State began. After playing baseball at Calhoun Community College, he transferred to the University of Alabama but struggled to find his direction in life. Eventually, he returned home and enrolled at Athens State in hopes that education would be the right fit for him.
“I took some education courses and I just didn’t love it. I never got that feeling of ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life,'” he explained.
Under the guidance of Felicia Mucci, Director of the Adult Learner Services Office, Allen shifted his focus to acquisition and contract management, earning a certification that would later prove invaluable in his career. Allen shared that Mucci helped figure out the best way to use his credits to finish his degree. Through this process, Allen realized that his people skills and desire to build genuine relationships to help those around him would be one of his greatest assets. This revelation and decision to finish his degree paved the way for a successful career in banking, where he now serves as the Huntsville Market President for Southern States Bank.
“I really enjoy the business aspect of banking and helping somebody’s dream come to life,” he said.
Allen’s career in banking has allowed him to make a significant impact on businesses in North Alabama. His passion for helping others achieve their goals is mirrored in his commitment to community service. He and Samantha are involved in fundraising for the NICU, driven by their personal experience and desire to support families facing similar challenges. Their work with the Huntsville Hospital Foundation ensures that the support they received is available to others in need.
“Being in the NICU made us realize that there’s a need and any family can be touched by tragedy,” Allen shared.
As Allen continues in his role as Market President for Southern States Bank in Huntsville, his vision is to grow the bank and make a meaningful impact in North Alabama.
“Growth and impact are so imperative to me because this is my home,” Allen emphasized.
His connection to the region runs deep and he is committed to raising his family and building his career in the place he loves. Today, Allen and his wife have three children: Willa, Alice Anne, and Sanders. Allen is an engaged Athens State alumnus and wants his story to encourage others to remain diligent in their endeavors. Allen shared that he hopes he can help break any stigma surrounding a non-traditional college experience. “I have my degree and certification hanging in my office because it’s important that I took the time to pursue my education,” Allen said.
“Athens State offered that opportunity to me and I want to do everything I can to remain engaged and involved.”
