Meet Derrick

For Derrick Ervin, earning his degree wasn’t just about academics; it was about growth, focus, and building a meaningful career.

Originally from Loachapoka, Alabama, Derrick moved to Huntsville ready for something new. As he explored universities, one stood out.

“I sought out different universities, but it was something about Athens State that just stood out to me,” Derrick said. “It impressed me how the professors knew every student’s name in class. At most of the larger universities, they might not know your name—based on the class size.”

That personalized environment made a lasting impact. Derrick earned his Bachelor of Arts in English in 2014, followed by a Master of Science in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management in 2020.

My sister always told me, ‘Your first degree is your passion. Your second degree is going to put food on the table,” he shared.

His English degree strengthened his critical thinking and communication skills, a tool he still uses daily. When he decided to specialize further, Athens State’s flexible and affordable graduate program allowed him to continue working full-time while earning his master’s degree 100% online.

“The flexibility was perfect for me,” Derrick said. “Even before graduation, I was implementing what I was learning here.”

Today, Derrick serves as a Logistics Management Specialist with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal. His work supports Army readiness by overseeing the responsible disposal and management of military equipment, which has a national-level impact.

Looking back, Derrick credits his family for motivation and Athens State with helping him gain clarity and direction.

“What I lacked coming out of high school was focus,” he said. “When I got here, my tunnel vision started to manifest and my desire for excellence flourished. Athens State helped me shape my career tremendously.”

Affordable. Flexible. Career-focused. For Derrick, Athens State delivered on every level and helped turn both passion and profession into purpose.
