Meet Jordan Doucet. When Doucet graduated from Athens State University in May 2026 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in mathematics, she left with more than a degree. Through the Honors Program, undergraduate research, and hands-on learning experiences, she built the foundation for a future in scientific research.
“The Honors Program gave me opportunities to learn and grow professionally through research, attending conferences, and defending my honors thesis,” Doucet said. “Now, I have the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in chemistry or begin my career in industry.”
Through the Honors Program, Jordan conducted three semesters of undergraduate research under the mentorship of Dr. Derrick Watkins, studying how mutations in microRNA-142 may affect its interaction with the Dicer protein. Doucet’s research explored how a single nucleotide change could alter microRNA processing, which may contribute to diseases such as glioblastoma, uterine carcinoma, and breast invasive carcinoma. Presenting and defending her honors thesis gave Doucet valuable experience that prepared her for graduate-level research.
In the Spring of 2026, Doucet earned many awards from research and honors thesis: Outstanding Chemistry Major Award, Hudson Alpha: CODE – 1st Place Award, UAH North Alabama Wilson/Dam Symposium – 2nd Place Award, Athens State University Student Scholarly Showcase – 2nd Place Award, Alabama Academy of Science – 3rd Place Award.
Beyond the classroom, Doucet served as president of the Math and Computer Science Club and was an active member of the Health and Career Science Club. Through community events like Arbor Day and the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention, she enjoyed serving others while building lasting friendships with fellow students.
Doucet credits Athens State’s personalized learning environment and hands-on laboratory experiences with preparing her for the next step in her career.

“I fully enjoyed learning through tactile experiences during labs,” she said. “Even learning what not to do has been an adventure.”
The affordability of Athens State also played an important role in her success.
“The affordability of tuition and the scholarships Athens State provided were an extraordinary blessing,” she said. “I’m especially thankful to the donors who funded the Louis Steele Scholarship, of which I am a recipient, and to the Honors Program for supporting my research.”
Jordan plans to pursue graduate studies and a career in biotechnology research, where she hopes to contribute to discoveries that improve disease prevention and treatment.
“I enjoy discovery through research,” Jordan said. “I look forward to continuing to learn, making new discoveries, and contributing to work that could improve people’s lives.”
