In December 2024, Kenyetta Ashford graduated magna cum laude from Athens State University with a Bachelor of Science focused in Education and Psychology and a minor in Childhood Development. But for Ashford, walking across the stage was more than an academic milestone; it was a deeply personal victory.
As a wife, mother of three, and full-time professional, Ashford’s path to graduation demanded determination, discipline, and faith. Late nights, long days, and the constant balancing act of family, career, and coursework could have been barriers. Instead, they became stepping stones, supported by a university designed for students like her.
Earning my degree was not just an academic milestone,” shared Ashford. “It was a personal victory.
Athens State’s commitment to accessibility and affordability made her degree possible. Known for offering some of the lowest tuition rates among public, four-year universities in Alabama and Tennessee, Athens State ensures that students don’t have to choose between financial stability and higher education. For working adults and transfer students, that level of support is transformative.
Ashford was able to invest in her future without an overwhelming financial burden, allowing her to focus on excellence.
Graduating magna cum laude and earning consistent recognition on the Dean’s list affirmed what Ashford already knew: perseverance, purpose, and faith matter. Her academic experience strengthened her confidence and resilience in ways that extended far beyond the classroom.

Equally impactful was the personalized support she received along the way. Ashford is especially grateful for the support provided by the Adult Learner Services Office (ALSO) and for the steady guidance, encouragement, and belief offered by the staff. With the help of the ALSO staff, Ashford was able to apply prior learning experience toward her degree requirements which allowed her to complete her program faster.
Studying education and psychology deepened Ashford’s understanding of how individuals learn, grow, and overcome challenges. Her minor in Childhood Development fueled her passion for supporting others during the foundational stages of life. Though her career path has evolved beyond the traditional classroom, her calling remains clear.
Today, Ashford serves individuals through her work with the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (AIDB), supporting independence, opportunity, and personal growth within the community. Her path may have extended beyond the traditional classroom, but her purpose remains rooted in helping others build confidence and reach their full potential.
“Athens State did more than prepare me academically,” said Ashford. “Athens State helped shape the leader, wife, mother, and professional I continue to become.”
Ashford’s journey is a reflection of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
At Athens State, students aren’t just earning degrees; they are gaining the tools, support, and confidence to transform their lives and impact their communities.
