An Athens State love story began with something simple: a pair of torn gym shorts. When Carolyn Majors kindly repaired them, Wain Diehl asked her out as a way to say thank you. That first date marked the beginning of a partnership that has now lasted more than 50 years.
Wain and Carolyn both attended Athens State and graduated in May 1975, marrying just six weeks later on June 28, 1975. Surrounded by TKE brothers and Phi Mu sisters serving as attendants, the couple began their life together deeply rooted in the friendships and traditions formed on campus. Their family grew with the birth of their son, Andy, in 1978.

After their time in Athens, Wain built a career as a systems analyst with Bank of America, a role that took their family from Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C. and later Richmond, Virginia. Carolyn earned a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and dedicated 30 years to teaching students with special needs. Now retired and living in Tullahoma, Tennessee, Wain and Carolyn reflect on their time at Athens as a tremendous blessing.
Athens will forever be a special part of our lives filled with so many wonderful memories, Wain shared.
Wain earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in May 1975. Both Wain and Carolyn were active members of the campus community. Today, they are lifetime members of the Athens State Alumni Association and remain connected to the place where their remarkable story began.
