The Athenian Players invite you to the Summer 2026 performance of Alice By Heart.
Set following the London Blitz of World War II, the story follows teen Alice Spencer and her best friend Alfred as they shelter in a London Underground station while Alfred is quarantined with tuberculosis. When Alice’s beloved book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is destroyed, she defies authority by retelling the story from memory—only to find the bunker residents and her own imagination transforming into the characters and world she describes.
As Alice and Alfred journey through a distorted Wonderland shaped by war, illness, and grief, the boundaries between fiction and reality blur. Their shared escape becomes increasingly fragile as Alfred’s condition worsens and Alice struggles between holding on and letting go. Guided and challenged by familiar figures like the Cheshire Cat and others, Alice is forced to confront denial, sorrow, and the painful necessity of acceptance.
Directed by Caroline Duncan, Alice By Heart will run from July 16-19. The July 16, 17, & 18 performances will take place at 7:00 pm and the final performance on Sunday, July 19 will be an afternoon matinee beginning at 2:00 pm.
